Try Carl's Subs. It's a great sub shop at 2208 Rhode Island Avenue NE (Woodridge). Lunchtime is crowded but worth the wait. Our favorite is the #9. Check the place out and you'll understand.

Enjoy and protect the Potomac River
Having access to water in the city is one of the great things about living in Washington DC. Even better is that there are so many ways to enjoy the Potomac River that it's too much for one blog post. So we've put together a Squidoo resource page for the Potomac River. It's filled with information on recreation, conservation, quotes, and river trivia. We hope you enjoy it and the Potomac.

Last night's ANC 5A07 Meeting
Here are highlights from ANC 5A07's meeting last night. Three guests presented and there were about 16 attendees.
Officer Robinson, MPD
You probably know Officer Robinson as the cop who walks the beat on 12th street. He read PSA 5A02 crime stats that compared the last 30 days to the 30 days prior to them. (Got it?) Crime was down in all areas he covered from violent crime to auto theft. kCommunity members gave the officer the addresses of various nuisance properties, which he promised to follow-up on.
Sara Glass, Ronald McDonald House
The Ronald McDonald House ("the House") is doing a land swap with the Franciscan Monastery. The Ronald McDonald House needs a new House to accommodate up to 100 additional families per year and to provide the families with private bathrooms. Of the two parcels of land the monastery was willing to swap, the House prefers the lot at 14th and Perry Streets. The entrance would be on Perry Street. The House is waiting for a response from the monastery. In addition, the House will need to go to the Zoning board to get its certificate of occupancy moved to the new site. Ideally, Ms. Glass said the House wants to be in its new space by early 2008.
Eric Rogers, ANC Liasion, DCRA
Don't you wish every DC government agency had an ANC liasion? Mr. Rogers was very knowledgeable. He explained the status of the church parking lot issue on the 1400 block of Jackson street. It's really too much to go into here but the issue seems to finally be headed to some resolution.
Community Concerns
Three neighbors who live adjacent to the future YES Organic Market raised their issues with the construction site. (If we knew the neighbors' names, we'd list the damage they allege to their properties.) Mr. Rogers said DCRA was aware of the situation and it was being looked into.
Ward 5 candidate watch: Bruce Marshall was present.
ANC5A07 will not hold a July meeting.

Brookland CDC's annual public meeting
The Brookland CDC's annual public meeting was well-attended. People were going in an out but at times there were more than 35 people in the room. Since the meeting ran for about 2 hours (not including the half-hour reception at the beginning), we're not doing a summary. We'll talk about what we found interesting.
Mary Farrell, who was serving as interim Executive Director until an executive director was appointed this month, talked about upcoming fundraising events. She said that this year the CDC plans to have its annual festival, a golf tournament and possibly a run.
The new Executive Director Lee Alexander gave brief remarks about her looking forward to working with the community and the board.
During his report on economic vitality Richard Layman said that after 40 years of neglect, we can't expect DC neighborhoods to be revitalized overnight.
Board member Lisa Farrell said the CDC had received $300,000 in neighborhood investment funding to improve the 12th street commercial area.
President Lavinia Wohlfarth said the CDC will be hiring additional staff in the fall. The CDC's 2005 annual report which details its finances was distributed near the end of the meeting.
Ward 5 Candidate Watch: Harry "Tommy" Thomas Jr. was present

1. Here's a community mini-guide How to Plan Your First Health Fair. Whether you find the mini-guide useful or useless, please let us know in a comment.
2. Today's Washington Post has an article about an effort to provide every DC resident with a "medical home". It's an initiative of the DC Primary Care Association and the city to increase access to primary care and to prevent residents from using emergency rooms for that purpose. Best of Washington DC T-shirts and Gifts applauds the city and the Association for taking our this very laudable and daunting task.

DC flags in Utah
Washington DC is often America's forgotten step-child. Although DC is the nation's capitol and located right here in the continental US, the city is used to little slights. For example, when coins were issued to commemorate the states, DC didn't get one.
One Utah flag shop has remembered to include DC. According to central Utah's Daily Herald,America Welcomes the World in Utah sells the DC flag. And yes, someone in Utah has bought the city's banner.
If you're not in Utah, get apparel and gifts inspired by the DC flag from Best of Washington DC T-shirts and Gifts.
