DC residents put up with a lot to live in the city. High rent, traffic, non-state status disrespect, and Metro breakdowns are just some sources of our local pain.  Sometimes you feel like you deserve a medal just for living here. Here's your medal.

DC Disrespected....Again

We know that DC is not a state. But does salt have to rubbed in the wound even when DC residents are trying to find work? dcgal was filling out online application to be an independent contractor for firm that operates nationwide. When entering her address, she dutifully clicked the state drop-down menu. DC wasn't listed. She scrolled further, thinking it must listed as Washington DC. Nope. DC, the capital of the United States, wasn't on the list. DC and its residents forgotten and disrespected again.

So she has sent an e-mail to the company to ask if Washington DC residents are eligible to apply.

Recently, Josh asked dcgal for great places to eat around DC. Once upon a time dcgal got out to the restaurants, but life happens and she's not able to do that much anymore. Back when she went out, these are the restaurants that she liked.

BNCA Meeting -- March 15, 2011 "Communities Working Together"

All are invited to the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association' s next General Meeting. The agenda is as follows:

1. Meet & Greet New MPD 5th District Commander Andrew "Andy" Solberg Commander Solberg is replacing Commander Lamar Greene who recently was promoted to Assistant Chief by Chief of Police Cathy Lanier. Commander Solberg has been on the District police force since 1987 and he looks forward to meeting people who live and work in the 5th District.

2. A conversation on "Communities Working Together" with Special Guests Ruth Marshall, President, Queens Chapel Civic Association and Paul Wood, President, Michigan Park Citizens Association.This is the second in a series of occasional BNCA meetings with active civic associations from across Ward 5 and the city as a whole.

The meeting will occur next Tuesday, March 15th at the HSC Pediatric Center (formerly the "Hospital for Sick Children") at 1731 Bunker Hill Road, N.E. at 7:00 PM.

First African-American Senator

For Black History Month, we honoring famous African-Americans with ties to Washington DC.

Hiram Revels was the first African-American elected to the United States Senate. He represented the state of Mississippi and completed the term that had been abandoned by Jefferson Davis. Revels took his oath of office for the Senate on February 25, 1870.

Mr. Douglass Comes to Washington

Since February is Black History Month, we're honoring prominent African-Americans who had ties to Washington DC.

In 1872, Frederick Douglass moved to Washington DC. Originally, he and his family lived on A Street on Capitol Hill. He later purchased an estate that he renamed Cedar Hill in Southeast Washington. During his residence in Washington, Douglass held several important posts, including Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia and U.S. Marshal of the District of Columbia.

Adult Double Dutch Session Begins

Jump Into some fun!

Five weeks of Adult Double Dutch sessions will take place on Fridays from 6:30 - 7:30p.m. at the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, 1100 Michigan Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20017, near the Brookland-CUA Metro on the red line.

The program is designed for adults, but all ages are welcome. Bring a doctor's note or be prepared to sign a waiver and come ready to have fun!
