Recently, Josh asked dcgal for great places to eat around DC. Once upon a time dcgal got out to the restaurants, but life happens and she's not able to do that much anymore. Back when she went out, these are the restaurants that she liked.

All are invited to the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association' s next General Meeting. The agenda is as follows:

1. Meet & Greet New MPD 5th District Commander Andrew "Andy" Solberg Commander Solberg is replacing Commander Lamar Greene who recently was promoted to Assistant Chief by Chief of Police Cathy Lanier. Commander Solberg has been on the District police force since 1987 and he looks forward to meeting people who live and work in the 5th District.

2. A conversation on "Communities Working Together" with Special Guests Ruth Marshall, President, Queens Chapel Civic Association and Paul Wood, President, Michigan Park Citizens Association.This is the second in a series of occasional BNCA meetings with active civic associations from across Ward 5 and the city as a whole.

The meeting will occur next Tuesday, March 15th at the HSC Pediatric Center (formerly the "Hospital for Sick Children") at 1731 Bunker Hill Road, N.E. at 7:00 PM.

Hiram Revels was the first African-American elected to the United States Senate. He represented the state of Mississippi and completed the term that had been abandoned by Jefferson Davis. Revels took his oath of office for the Senate on February 25, 1870.

Since February is Black History Month, we're honoring prominent African-Americans who had ties to Washington DC.

In 1872, Frederick Douglass moved to Washington DC. Originally, he and his family lived on A Street on Capitol Hill. He later purchased an estate that he renamed Cedar Hill in Southeast Washington. During his residence in Washington, Douglass held several important posts, including Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia and U.S. Marshal of the District of Columbia.

You may have heard the adage that DC shuts down in July and August. Not so! Whether you're vacationing in Washington DC or staycationing to save cash, there are lots of fun places to go. Read on and learn where in Washington DC you can go horse back riding, rent a paddle boat or see a great blue heron.

Rock Creek Park is where locals have picnics and family gatherings. While Rock Creek is the park's most notable feature, also there are several wonderful hiking and biking trails. And you can go for a horse back ride during a guided horse tour. Of course, if you bring your own horse, remember to stay on the bridled trails!

Bordering downtown DC, the Tidal Basin is an inlet of the Potomac River. It's home to the Jefferson Memorial and the FDR memorial. The Tidal Basin is also where the cherry trees of Cherry Blossom Festival fame are planted. In addition to those attractions, you can rent a paddle boat or take a leisurely stroll here.

Located on the banks of the Anacostia River, visit Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens for the waterlilies and lotus blossoms. Known also as a spot for birding, you may see great blue herons, marsh wrens, mallards, or Canada geese. For hikers, don't miss the .7 mile boardwalk trail that leads to the marsh.

Same Sex "Marriage" Controversy in DC

Background
In May 2009, the DC City Council approved a bill to recognize same sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions. Last week the DC Board of Elections and Ethics said the matter should not go before DC voters in referendum. Seven supporters of traditional marriage have filed a lawsuit to overturn the Board's decision.

A few reasons to support traditional marriage
Some would have us believe that not recognizing marriage between people of the same sex would violate their civil or human rights. Little could be further from reality. Here are a few reasons why.

First, recognizing same sex marriages would redefine the historical definition of marriage. Historically and traditionally, our society has defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Secondly, we need the union of males and females for the procreation and continuation of the human race. Once we begin to recognize unions that cannot naturally reproduce, we put our society in demographic danger. We can reach a point that we won't have enough people to keep our society going.

In addition, we must remember the right to freedom of religion. If same sex marriage is recognized, the free practice of religion is hindered. Religious institutions and individuals that cannot recognize same sex marriage because of their religious convictions will be criminalized. Here's an example. In Massachusetts, we've already seen a Catholic adoption agency go out of business because the state declared the agency's religious practice of not allowing homosexual couples to adopt illegal. Orphans lose. Society loses. Is this what we want for DC?

Finally, if we redefine marriage and allow two men or two women to marry, we provide the basis for other nontraditional unions to be legalized as marriage. On what grounds will tell three or more persons that can't be married to each other? How then can tell close relatives that can't marry each other? What will stop people from claiming the right to marry small children or pets?

There are more reasons to support traditional marriage, but dcgal will leave those for a future post.

Video Shows Planned Parenthood Ignores Sexual Abuse of Minor

Life Action, a California-based pro life group, has just released an undercover video that shows Planned Parenthood ignoring child sexual abuse. The footage was taken at Tuscon Arizona Planned Parenthood clinic. The video shows an actress, posing as a pregnant 15-year-old, who informs Planned Parenthood staff that the baby's father is age 27. Instead of fulfilling the legal requirement to report the abuse, Planned Parenthood advised the girl not to bring the man to her judicial review hearing. (The hearing is required by Arizona law to waive parental consent for the abortion.)

Remembering Black History Month: Frederick Douglass

African-American abolitionist Frederick Douglass is well-known as an outstanding historical figure of 19th century America. He was an orator who spoke against slavery and a writer who published the "North Star", an anti-slavery newspaper. In 1845, Frederick Douglass published the slave narrative, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. It was the first of his three autobiographies.
His Connection to Washington DC
In 1872, Douglass came to live in DC. He served the city in several capacities, including US Marshall for the District of Columbia.

Bid for Same-sex Marriage in DC may come next week

During this busy holiday season, you may have missed this article in the Washington Times on the District government's effort to legalize same-sex marriage. According to the Times, a majority of the DC City Council and the mayor support same-sex marriage. Therefore, if proposed a same-sex marriage measure would likely pass. Other sources have said the Council may be planning to act as early as next week on January 6 2009. Considering all of the issues that challenge our wonderful city, such as crime and troubled public schools, is this how we want our leaders spending their time and our tax dollars? Do a majority of the people of the District of Columbia support gay marriage?

The District of Columbia will offer its second 2008 Sales Tax Holiday beginning at 12:01 am Friday, November 28, through midnight Sunday, December 7. The Sales Tax holiday grants an exemption from the 5.75 percent sales tax for clothes, shoes, and accessory items. To qualify, each item must cost $100 or less.

The sales tax exemption will apply to each eligible item, no matter how many items are on the bill.

Sales Tax Holiday
Clothes (clothing) Any article of apparel for humans, including pants, shirts and blouses, dresses, coats, jackets, belts, hats, undergarments, and multiple-piece garments sold as a set, if $100 or less.
Shoes All footwear, except skis, swim fins, roller blades, and roller-skates.
Accessory Items
Jewelry, non-prescription eyeglasses, watches, watchbands, handbags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, gloves, scarves, ties, headbands, hats, belts and belt buckles, and other traditional accessory items.

Households throughout the Brookland neighborhood have joined together to hold yard sales on that Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. In addition to the individual yard sales, St. Anthony of Padua’s Church on 12th Street NE will be participating as well, with a yard sale in the church’s parking lot.

In joining together for the Great Yard sale, Brooklanders are inviting people from all over the Washington metro area to come to Brookland for a day of fun and great bargains. Andrew Fortin, an organizer of the event said, “With all of these yard sales going on at once, there’s no telling what treasures you’ll find! And, at the same time, we also want to showcase Brookland as a great D.C. neighborhood with a lot to offer.”

Yard sale organizers have posted a blog (brooklandblog.blogspot.com) with complete information on the Great Brookland Yard Sale, including a map of the area with participating homes highlighted, and information on some of the items that will be for sale. Holiday Travel Safety Tips

"Plan ahead to avoid a bumpy road

Allow extra time in a travel schedule. Bad traffic can often be avoided with a little preparation. The heaviest travel days are usually before and after Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Consider taking an extra day off so that you aren't stuck in the pack. Also, try to minimize holiday stress by getting the bulk of your shopping done well before the holiday.

Make sure cars are well-equipped for travel. Breaking down in the dark, in bad weather or in the cold can crush the holiday spirit. It's a good idea to take the car in for a winter "check-up." A mechanic can inspect the antifreeze, battery, windshield wipers and other cold-weather components. Make sure that the tire pressure is at the recommended levels, as tires can be hazardous in wet weather when they are not filled to proper levels.

Think before you drive. the highways are a community. As much as we may want to think we are isolated in our steel and glass bubbles, driving is really a social interaction without words. To understand holiday driving conditions, think of the way people act outside of their cars in this time of year. Many are worried, preoccupied, hurried, distracted and all those states of mind that make them easily agitated and less careful. On the road, this means that everyone should be more vigilant than usual, give people more distance and be forgiving when someone does something rash or absent-minded. Avoid confrontations, and try not to let other drivers bring you out of the happy holiday zone.
